F.A.Q
- Regarding our videosQ: Where can I watch Seventeen shows that you subbed?
Q: Where can I find Seventeen shows that were subbed by others?
We usually don't sub things that are officially subbed or have been subbed by other fansubbers. Chances are good you will find what you're looking for on tiinyboo's SEVENTEEN Video Index, a complete Seventeen video links library.
Q: Are you affiliated with Pledis?
No, we are not affiliated with Pledis. We are your normal fangirling Carats that sub voluntarily out of their free time to get SEVENTEEN's message across, through overlapping audios or not.
Q: Can you sub Seventeen TV?
Seventeen TV have either bad video or audio quality, also there are too many episodes for us to sub, so we will not do it.
Q: Did you sub all Andromeda episodes?
A: We have subbed several episodes of Andromeda and recently we’re back to sub the remaining episodes.
Q: Do you accept requests? Are there videos you don't sub?
We have plans regarding on what shows we are going to sub, so we can not accept requests. However, if a certain show gets many requests and it’s feasible for us to sub, we will consider it.
We don't sub paid content (e.g. DVD, fanmeeting) or content from paid platforms (e.g. weverse). Q: Can I make a gif/video edit from your videos?
We allow making gifs and video edits as long as they're not uploaded as full segments and a full video and please don't crop out our logo. Reuploading and redistributing our videos is strictly prohibited.
Q: I cannot download or view the Google Drive file.
Please follow these steps to add the file to your drive.
Q: Why are you not subbing Going Seventeen/Going Moments?
Going Seventeen with English subtitles can be watched on their official V App channel as well as on their official Youtube channel (for the newer episodes). Going Moments are the highlights of the main episodes and have no new scenes, so we are not subbing it.
Q: Can you upload smaller file sizes or more resolutions for the videos?
We can't always make multiple files for all of our videos since Google Drive and other such sites have limited space. For shorter videos and clips, we cannot accommodate more file sizes and/or resolutions. For actual full shows, such as SVT Club, etc, we will try to upload lower resolutions and smaller files.
Q: Are we allowed to use your subs to translate to another language?
You may not have our subbing files, but you can use our subs as a reference for subbing to other languages. Credit must be in the post/description and a little screen/pop-up on the video itself is appreciated. You also can't just use our videos and add subs to them. We will help you find the raw video (if possible), so please contact us instead!
Q: Can I reupload your videos?
You are not permitted to redistribute or reupload our videos.
- Regarding our teamQ: What are the available positions in the team?
There are Korean and Japanese translators, timers, typesetters, QC/spot translators, encoders & uploaders and project managers.
Q: How do you sub your videos?
First of all, translators do all the translation of the video, including the captions and the conversations. After that, the files get transferred to timers and/or typesetters. Timers set the timing of the translations to match with the captions and conversations. After all the translations are timed, it needs to be typesetted. Typesetters are the ones who choose the font (colors, size, style) and make sure the sub is readable. Usually our timers and/or typesetters need to have basic understanding of Korean to be able to match the translations with the captions and conversations. Sometimes timers and typesetters can be done by one person, sometimes not.
After that, the subtitle files are being reviewed (and edited if necessary) by a QCer. QCer makes sure the subtitle has minimal to no error, from translations to the timing and typesetting. After that, QCer combines all subtitle files to one file (usually in .ass format). Move on to encoder, who has to combine the raw video and the subtitle file into one final file that is a hardsubbed video, and makes sure that the quality of the video and audio is not reduced. Encoder also has to put the logo of the team in the video. After that, the final video is ready to be uploaded to several platforms that we use, like Youtube, Dailymotion, Openload, and Google Drive. Translating needs a lot of time and concentration, especially for videos that have many captions and many people speaking at the same time (this is unavoidable unfortunately, as we have 13 talkative boys ??). Timing and typesetting also consumes so much energy and time as we have to match the translations line-by-line. QC requires accuracy and also time to make sure that everything are translated correctly, to leave no room for misunderstanding in future use. Encoding also requires more, more time, as in average, an 1-hour video needs around 4~6 hours to encode (assuming the video is HD). Q: Why does it take so long for you to release a video?
As we have explained, subbing takes a lot of time and everyone in the team has their own real life to consider. Please note that we are basically volunteering our time to sub, and we don’t get paid for this.
Q: Are you still hiring people?
Yes, our application form is always open.
Q: How many people are there in the team?
We have around 60 members, but not everyone is active at the moment.
Q: How many people handle your accounts?
Twitter and Curiouscat accounts are handled by two people, project manager and the encoder/uploader.
The encoder/uploader handles L17s Website, Youtube, and other streaming sites. Q: Why are you not replying to my question?
If you send a question via curiouscat, please note that we can’t post all answers on Twitter to avoid spam. Please check our curiouscat to check if your question is answered or not. We choose not to answer questions that are too frequently asked. Also, for questions regarding complicated matters, the admin needs to ask the group beforehand.
Q: What applications do you use?
Translators: Video player, Microsoft Word
Timer & Typesetter: Aegisub Encoder & Uploader: Avidemux, FFmpeg Q: Do you get paid for subbing?
We are your normal fangirling Carats that sub voluntarily (and unpaid) out of their free time to get SEVENTEEN's message across. Our website is ad-free. If you see ads on our videos, it's because Pledis, the music distributor, the original content creator and/or the website itself have monetized the video.
Donations that we receive are strictly being used to upkeep our website, storage, etc. //tl,dr: No we don't get paid :) |
